Bio

A69C9329_copyI’m the Travel Editor of The San Francisco Chronicle, where in the past 14 years as a travel writer I’ve written about, reported on and been hopelessly lost in destinations on six continents. My editing and attempts to divine, describe and defy the expectations about places — from Havana’s back alleys to Kyoto’s temples to the floor of a hippie bus in Modesto — have earned 10 Lowell Thomas Awards from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation.

I also write the Bad Latitude travel blog at SFGate.com, an offbeat, irreverent and fun look at the world of travel and, well, the world in general.

Most importantly, I am an outspoken advocate for great travel storytelling, the kind that entertains, inspires and transports readers. There is no substitute for it, and media outlets (old and new) are publishing less and less of it.
